Radioactive Iodine (I-131)Therapy for Hyperthyroid Cats:
What is Hyperthroidism?
Hyperthroidism is a disease affecting older cats in which there is excess thyroid hormone being released from a tumor in the thyroid gland. This usually will affect older cats from 10-16 years of age.
What is radioactive iodine (I-131)?
I-131 is a radioactive form of the mineral, iodine. When injected into the body, a large percentage of the radioactive iodine accumulates in the thyroid gland. There, it will destroy the abnormal cells that are overproducing thyroid hormones, sparing normal cells in the thyroid gland, as well as the other normal cells in the body.
How is I-131 administered?
The radioiodine is given as a single injection on the first hospital day and will stay in the hospital until the radioactive materials have decayed and been metabolized by the body and then can be released to the owner safely.
This form of therapy is much simpler and carries the risk of fewer side effects than other forms of medical or surgical therapy.
